How Mikey Angelo turns the internets chaos into catchy pop songs
Mikey Angelo has experienced VidCon from both sides of the camera.
The creator attended his first convention as a fan, idolizing early YouTube stars like Fred and dreaming about one day making videos of his own. Now, five VidCons later, Angelo is walking the convention floor as one of the featured creators and reflecting on how dramatically the internet has changed since those early days.
In this VidCon edition of Creator Playbook, Angelo opens up about building a career by documenting the unfolding of internet culture. His monthly musical recaps have become a staple for followers looking to catch up on everything that happened online, but behind each song are hours of scrolling, note-taking, and deciding which moments deserve a place in the final cut.
“It’s basically me regurgitating my own For You Page,” he tells Mashable in our VidCon studio.
That constant internet connection comes with its own challenges. Angelo speaks candidly about creator burnout, why he struggles to disconnect from social media, and how he balances keeping up with trends without simply chasing them. Rather than participating in every viral moment, he says he’d rather document them in his own voice — a strategy that’s helped him stand out in an increasingly crowded creator economy.
The conversation also explores his hopes of returning to long-form YouTube, his ambitions as a songwriter beyond internet recaps, and why the word “creator” no longer fully captures what many online personalities do today.
