The Daily Show reacts to Trump slapping additional tariffs on Canada
The word “tariff” seems to have been blissfully absent from the news cycle for a while now, but this week it made a comeback.
In the Daily Show clip above, host Desi Lydic reacts to Trump announcing 50 percent tariffs on several goods imported from Canada, from dairy products and paper to furniture and hockey sticks.
“No hockey sticks? What’s my husband gonna keep jammed in the corner of our garage for the past 15 years?” Lydic said. “Now, obviously, it’s very frustrating to be back in this trade war again, but if you’re worried that this is another case of Trump abusing his power again relax, these tariffs are legal under the Smoot-Hawley act, which has been around since 1930 when it helped prolong and worse the great depression. So cheer up!”
Lydic goes on to explain why the tariffs are being imposed now, citing a Truth Social post in which Trump accuses Canada of “not properly maintaining their forests,” leading to the US “being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air.”
“Are you sure you want America to set a precedent for paying for pollution?” asks Lydic. “I feel like your pals at Pesticide-Microplastic-Death-Diarrhea-Lettuce Inc. might have other ideas.”
